With the Worldcup football fever entering to the next level of excitement in the pre quarter stage, the big football tournament in South Africa is dripping with stories like a thick layer of frosting on a 10-foot high cake. Will brilliant Brazilian goal-keeper Julio Cesar lead his team to the Cup title? Will Ghana’s Kevin-Prince Boateng, born of a German mother and Ghanaian father, find himself opposing his half-brother Jerome, who plays for Germany and is in the same grouping as Ghana? These stories and much more are instantly available for free on Nokia S60 5th Edition and widget-enabled S60 3rd Edition devices through ESPNsoccernet.

ESPNsoccernet is one in a large stable of sports widgets powered by Plusmo, now a part of AT&T interactive. The widget is a powerful tool that pulls in team and region news coverage, live game visualization, match commentary, team tracking, detailed fixtures, tables, and more. You get not only ESPN’s latest tournament coverage and stories, but also Premiere league and other soccer stories depending upon your choice of team settings.

I tried the app on my Nokia E63. The first step was setting the language, where I had my choice of English, Spanish, French, Italian, and German.

Then, I picked a region of interest from choices that included the five language countries, plus Scotland, the USA, Europe in general, and a global option. I chose England for demo purposes. If I had switched to Europe, I would have also had access to UEFA and Super Cup stories.

With England as a selection, I had a choice of Premiere League and FA Cup stories. I chose the FA Cup, and it then displayed the most recently played match.

Selection of a region determines which sets of stories will be chosen by the ESPN soccernet RSS news feed mechanism.

The icon list on the right-hand side includes my favorite teams (the star icon), schedules of selected teams (the calendar icon), articles about the teams (the newspage icon), and a change settings icon (the three dots). I clicked on the news page icon to see the list of stories, shown below.

Click on the newspage icon to have the RSS feed pull up the current stories about your team(s).

Clicking on any headline brings up the details of that story for perusing. S60 5th edition devices allow touch scrolling, while S60 3rd Edition devices use the rocker key for scrolling.

The full article can be viewed by scrolling, and related articles can be selected and accessed.

At any time, I could also switch my settings to another region or team just by clicking on the three-dot icon. I found that it was better to specify my teams very narrowly in order to sip from the fountain rather than the powerful firehose of all ESPNsoccernet coverage.

Change teams using the three-dot settings icon.

The ESPNsoccernet widget can be downloaded for free from Ovi Store. Take it with you as you enjoy coverage of the tournament this month.

* full-page zoom, which resizes images and embedded objects too, not just text. It’s important to know the keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl – to zoom out, Ctrl + to zoom in and Ctrl 0 to go back to the normal view.

* autoscroll by middle-clicking on a page and indicating the direction

* profiles are a great way to separate Chrome’s settings in different categories: you could create a work profile with its own homepage, bookmarks and browsing history and profile for your personal projects. The great thing about Chrome is that you don’t have to close the browser to change your profile: just open a new window in a separate profile.

* support for Greasemonkey scripts (or user-scripts). To enable this experimental feature you need to right-click on Chrome’s shortcut from your desktop, select Properties and add -enable-user-scripts in the Target field. For now, you’ll need to place the scripts in c:\scripts, but the location will change in the next builds.

* other important improvements: updates to WebKit and the V8 JavaScript engine, a better implementation for SafeBrowsing (malware/phishing protection), new code for the HTTP network protocol.

How to get the new version?

1. If you don’t have Google Chrome, install it from google.com/chrome
2. Subscribe to the developer preview channel. This is required even if you’ve previously subscribed to the channel.
3. Wait until the new version is downloaded (you may force the updatie by opening the “About Google Chrome” dialog).

“The Dev channel is where ideas get tested (and sometimes fail). The Dev channel can be very unstable at times, and new features usually require some manual configuration to be enabled. Still, simply using Dev channel releases is an easy (practically zero-effort) way for anyone to help improve Google Chrome.”

In a sleek stainless steel frame and measuring just about 16.6mm in thickness, the TL100 is loaded with a range of advanced technologies that make it a user’s delight.

With 12.2 mega pixels, the point-and-shoot digital camera bundles a large 2.7” LCD screen with a 3x optical zoom. Packed with Samsung’s signature Smart Auto feature, the camera allows users to select one of 11 scene modes on board. Other technologies included are the Smart Album program that organizes images and enables effortless search options.

The Samsung TL100 camera also boasts of Face Detection, Smile Shot, Blink Detection and a distinct Beauty Shot technology that interesting gives imperfections on the subjects face a retouch. Even skin tones can be changed through this function. The novel digital camera also wraps in a Digital Image Stabilization (DIS) technology that aids in blur reduction normally caused due to vibrations, hand shake or unwanted movements.

According to Tony Sorice, vice president of Sales and Marketing for Digital Imaging, at Samsung Electronics America, “The TL100 exemplifies style and simplicity. This is an attention grabbing digital camera, not only because of its brushed stainless steel body and slim profile, but because of the advanced features that it brings to the user’s fingertips, which make taking a digital photograph easier than ever.”

Sporting a maximum resolution of 800×592 (SVGA) at 20fps for video recording, the Tl100 also incorporates many in-camera editing controls that will enable users to pause and resume video recordings and Samsung’s patent Function Description program. The latter feature is actually an instruction guide that allows for easy understanding of camera settings.

Though there is no word on the price, the Samsung TL100 is expected to be launched around spring 2009.

If the Tesla Roadster just isn’t enough for you…not fast enough, not weird enough, and not expensive enough, then you should probably start looking out for Eliica’s. Just two of these Japanese peculio-mobiles currently exist, but the Eliica team is looking to get corporate sponsorship to produce 200 of them.

And, if they get that sponsorship, you’ll be able to pick one up for the low, low price of $255,000.

Now, I know what you’re thinking…why eight wheels? Well, very simply, so it can go faster. Traditionally, more rolling resistance would be a bad thing, but not if each of the wheels has its own 60 KW electric motor.

The goal of the team building the car at Keio University is to beat the world EV speed record, currently set at 400 mph.

Released in April 1981 by the Osborne Computer Corporation, the Osborne 1 is considered to be the first true portable computer – it closes-up for protection, and has a carrying handle. It even has an optional battery pack, so it doesn’t have to plugged into the 110VAC outlet for power.
While quite revolutionary, the Osborne does have its limitations. For example, the screen is only 5″ (diagonal) in size, and can’t display more than 52 characters per line of text. To compensate, you can actually scroll the screen display back and forth with the cursor keys to show lines of text up to 128 characters wide
The two pockets beneath the floppy drives work great for floppy disk storage, although the Osborne modem also fits perfectly in the the left pocket and plugs into the front-mounted “modem” port.

LCD and PLASMA

You all know LCD, liquid crystal display which is the current king of display devices. Plasma stays very near to it. LCD is cheaper and good, their black level reproductions have markedly improved, ditto their viewing angles, and their popularity makes them cheaper than Plasma. Plasmas though, are still the tech to pick if you want the absolute best visual quality.

FED – Straddling The CRT And the LCD

Field Emission Display is a self-luminescent display like CRT. Being self-lit, it offers superior brightness, contrast, viewing angle compared to an LCD. Thus FEB displays feature the picture quality of a CRT and the flat profile of an LCD or a Plasma display.

LCoS – Bringing The Chips To Play

Liquid Crystal on Silicon was a tech quickly favored and just as quickly abandoned by Intel.. It uses a silicon chip at its heart, which is why Intel was interested in the technology. Using standard chip-making processes, an LCoS embeds LCD pixel units directly on the surface of a chip. The chip itself has all the circuitry needed to operate these LCD units. The big advantage with LCoS is that the technology improves as chip fabrication improves: with a smaller chip, you can add more LCD pixels, giving better resolution.

Intel's abortive LCoS chip

Laser – May Be The Future King

A Laser TV will essentially replace the traditional light sources in rear – projection HD sets with Laser light. As such, it is not a new technology, but an evolution of a current standard. It could potentially improve the quality of LCD and DLP sets. Laser sets promise to be thinner, consume less power, improve refresh rates, and extend a TV’s life. They also promise to offer a wider range of colours – where the LCD reproduces about 50 per cent of the colour gamut visible to the human eye, a laser unit could go higher than 90 per cent colour gamut reproduction. This will make colours more ‘life-like’.
