Barcamp Kerala 8 is here…!!

Its back again this summer ti serve cool tech beverages to cut down the heat — “Barcamp Kerala 8”

BarCamp Kerala 8 is at MACFAST, Thiruvala on March 28^th, 2010 BarCamp Kerala or BCK is the biggest and coolest techy event in Kerala.

For those of you who don’t know what a BarCamp is…

BarCamp is an international network of user generated conferences – open, participatory workshop-events, whose content is provided by participants – often focusing on early-stage web applications, and related open source technologies, social protocols, and open data formats.

Lights Out Campaign

ExNoRa, a non-government Chennai-based voluntary environmental service organisation, has launched a a massive Cool the Globe campaign by name, “99999 lights out” to create awareness on global warming, its causes, consequences and solutions. The campaign carries the message – switch off lights for 9 minutes at 9 p.m. on the 9th day of the 9th month on the 9th year of the millennium. The aim of the 99999 Lights Out Campaign is to combat Global warming, to make people more conscious about the environment, to motivate people to reduce their respective carbon footprint, to mitigate climate change and to teach people Adaptation and Disaster Preparedness techniques.

How can you contribute?

Grow more trees. Use Energy efficient equipments. Practice transport simplicity, Switch on lights only when it is necessary, Turn off your lights when not in use. Adapt an eco-friendly lifestyle. Reduce waste & Conserve water. Trap methane and convert it as fuel.

Even though maestro A.R. Rahman has proved he has impeccable music sense – as is evidenced by his twin Oscars, when it comes to following fashion trends, he completely trusts his wife Saira Banu, says his stylist Vijayeta Kumar.

‘He is a very simple person and doesn’t believe in doing anything flashy. He is not at all brand conscious and blindly depends on Saira for the final call,’ Vijayeta Kumar said. ‘The reason behind this is that Saira is more aware and keeps herself updated about the latest trends,’ she added. This Mumbai-based stylist who is also a filmmaker has been associated with Rahman for over a year now. She had met him on the sets of a musical show ‘Mission Ustad’ on 9X, for which she was the stylist.

Rahman bagged the Oscars for best original score in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and its theme song ‘Jai Ho’. At the Oscars, Rahman was wearing a black Lanvin tuxedo and for the live performance he wore Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s creation – a black sherwani.

‘The red carpet dressing is very strict so we were very clear from the beginning that he is going to wear a tuxedo. ‘We zeroed in for Sabyasachi for the sherwani because he is the best. We had to make sure that Rahman was wearing something comfortable while performing. So what better than a sherwani and that too a Sabyasachi,’ she added. Was it a coincidence that both Rahman and Saira were wearing black? ‘Both of them just love black. A.R. Rahman Wins Golden Globe Award For Slumdog Millionaire

Indian music maestro AR Rahman created history on Sunday night by winning the Golden Globe Award. At a glittering ceremony in Los Angeles, Rahman bagged the Golden Globe for Best Original Music Score for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. The film also won the award for Best Screenplay at the 66th Golden Globe Awards ceremony.

Rahman bagged the Golden Globe for his song ‘Jai Ho’, penned by lyricist Gulzar.

The Golden Globe Awards have now set the countdown for next month’s Academy awards.

The film, which is the story of a Mumbai underdog’s rags-to-riches run, had earned four nominations, including for Best Picture-Drama, Best Director for Boyle and Best Screenplay for Simon Beaufoy.

‘Slumdog…’ is based on a novel by Indian diplomat Vikash Swarup and stars actors Anil Kapoor and Irrfan Khan in the lead among others.

The film has been shot at various locations in Mumbai including Victoria Terminus railway station, which was targeted by terrorists on November 26, last year.

Boyle’s feel-good film depicts the moving story of a slumdweller Jamal, who goes on to win USD 20 million on Indian reality show ‘Who Wants to Be A Millionaire?’ in a bid to win his love back.

9 Year Old Indian become Microsoft’s Youngest Certified Professional

Just came across an article in Gizmodo wherein the story of the youngest Microsoft Certified Professional was flashed. It is really great to know that a 9 Year Old girl who have achieved the status of ‘Youngest Microsoft Professional’ is an Indian. As per sources, to become Microsoft Professional, one has to appear a very hard and competitive exam conducted by Microsoft and this exam is usually taken up by highly qualified computer experts. But it is really a pride for our nation to know that, the exam which is hard to be passed out even by some experts is being cracked out by a 9 Year old south Indian Girl.

Seems this is a new year gift for our country and everyone residing here should feel proud of it.

9 Innocent Lives

Nine school children aged between five and nine years were killed in Kerala Thursday when a van ploughed into them as they were returning home from school, officials said. The students belonged to the Irikkur Sree Narayana Primary School at Irikkur, 50 km from here. The vehicle was driven by Abdul Kabeer.

While the eight died instantly, at least 15 others were injured. A few of them are in serious condition.

People in the area apprehend the driver and handed him over to the police.

Visuals came on news channels were really heartbreaking. Body parts of the kids were spread over the road side.
